The Experience
Their motto is all about being comfortable. Cocktails, food and sports, as in lets get real comfortable indulging in the things we love. You’ll enjoy the roomy booths or the high top tables all with a clear view of the giant screens. If you are a sports fan this is a spot that makes watching a game with a few people who might not be as into the game as you are pleasurable. There is a pretty decent beer list, not so huge that it is confusing but just large enough to give you some very serious choices. While the room is nice and the atmosphere may on first glance seem subdued you’ll notice a completely different look when games are on. If your team scores feel free to scream because plenty of people will be celebrating as well.

Who You Are Taking To The Restaurant
This is a spot that you can take your friends who have to see a game or your picky eaters who will watch the game but need a good meal. As well. It’s not fine dining but they have taken comfort food and cleaned it up a bit. Don’t get me wrong, they do bar food very well but if you scan the menu you can tell that they are trying to capture the sports fan that does not always need chicken wings and bean dip.

What You’ll Order
The food options have two personalities. Bar food that is salty enough to make you want more beer or the healthy choices that make you feel good about yourself after your team plays a big game. For example while you are having the cheese steak spring roll and the buffalo shrimp your healthy alternative could have been the hummus plate or the grilled steak salad. You could choose the Public House Burger but the healthy choice would be the hickory chicken sandwich.

However, if you just want to watch a game and have some fun order a few beers and snack on the Belgian Mussels, the Kettle Chip Nachos and the Beer Braised Short Rib Sandwich. Who is really counting calories in Las Vegas anyway?

Wynn Las Vegas
When Steve Wynn opened this resort it was opulent. It had class. It was about luxury and style. Well, those things still remain. It’s just that a subtle and some say not so subtle change has occurred over the last couple of years. It’s somewhat of a clash between two different types of Vegas experiences. The luxury getaway still exists in some form at Wynn but it has been supplanted to some extent by the nightlife vibe. If there is one resort that is at the center of the juggernaut in after dark entertainment that would have to be Wynn and Encore Las Vegas. If you don’t believe me maybe you have never seen the lines at Tryst, XS and Surrender. Don’t even get me started on the action at Encore Beach Club.

Sleep. The rooms have recently had a redo but they were pretty nice to begin with. If you expect the best the best will appear and all the little things are done right at Wynn. Expect those super soft towels and a nice tub to soak in. The beds will hug you and the giant television will dazzle you. If you feel like lounging on a soft couch it’s there and the roomy desk almost makes you want to sit down and write out a few postcards to those unlucky people who are not staying at this hotel. Ask for a view of the pool and the golf course if you love the daytime activities because the view of the strip from these rooms is so impressive that it prevents you from getting any sleep.

Eat. The concept of great hotel dining was taken up a notch when Wynn Las Vegas opened. Now, the last couple of years have changed that a bit as plenty more great restaurants have filled the shelves of Las Vegas hotels but you can still get some pretty good eating in at Wynn. Some of my favorites like SW Steakhouse and the Country Club are still very impressive. You might want to check out La Cave for a more casual wine bar and Tapas experience or Allegro for some their approach to Italian American cuisine.

Dance . The spotlight on nightlife is huge at Wynn where you can dance by the waterfall at Tryst or mingle near the pool at XS or do a little inside and outside socializing at Surrender. The clubs are hot at Wynn and you’ll notice that by the long lines to get into the clubs.

Play. You can choose the spa or the pool but if you have the opportunity you have to choose to relax at the golf course. The course is so well manicured and the views of the strip are exactly what the golfer in you needs on your Las Vegas vacation.

If you are staying at the Wynn or Encore adjoining resorts, or you just happen to be nearby with an unlimited credit account, you’ll have a hard time resisting the pull of the shops at Wynn and Encore.

Steve Wynn, who assembled the impressive shopping arcade at Bellagio (the first seriously high-end retail collection on the Las Vegas Strip) sought to top his own creation with first the Shops at Wynn and then later the second row of stores at Encore. Few retail experiences could easily improve upon both the selection and the lavishness of the surroundings.

At the Wynn Esplanade, look for the House of Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Manolo Blahnik, Oscar De La Renta, and Chloé. It might be considered a small selection, but it’s a small selection of some of the finest designers in the world, without question.

Men will be well-dressed by Alexander McQueen and Brioni—and if that doesn’t interest, send them over to the exclusive Ferrari store and dealership (the only one in Nevada), elsewhere on property.

But it goes beyond fashion, Chopard, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Rolex, and IWC Schaffhausen timepieces are all represented here, Jewelers include Cartier and Graff Diamonds, Vertu high-end mobile phones also has a rare storefront. And then there’s LVNV, the store in which you can buy all of the products, linens, towels and other items featured throughout the property. As well as some gorgeous décor selections chosen by property designer Roger Thomas.

In Encore—actually the shopping connects the properties—you’ll find Hermes and Loro Piana knits, Rock & Republic, more timepieces by Piaget, and boutiques featuring a variety of couture and shoewear brands. There’s also a great store with food and kitchen products selected by all the resort chefs.

Wow, speaking of food, all this schlepping is going to make you hungry and thirsty. Luckily, if you’re in the Wynn Esplanade, you can end your retail therapy with a unique dinner at Bartolotta Ristorante Di Mare, a gorgeous and unique restaurant serving rare fish flown in directly from Italy. Over in Encore’ shops is the slightly less fancy but plenty fun Botero Steakhouse, a gorgeous circular room inspired by–and displaying–the works of Fernando Botero (you’ll recognize his plump figures immediately). The tic-tac-toe crudo plate here is one of my favorites, but you’ll find great meat too. And if you happen to be vegetarian or vegan, fear not, both restaurants have special selections for you, right on the menu. This property has truly thought of everything.

Las Vegas has always been a good place to drink. But now it’s an excellent place to drink. Not jut because you’re always within arm’s reach of someone happy to serve you (age and moderation in mind) but because there’s so much variety and creativity everywhere you turn.

Take the Venetian and Palazzo resorts for example. Say you wanted to try a few things there, just for fun. No commitments, just playing the field, as it were. Okay, let’s ease into things. Go to the Palazzo casino floor and depending on your mood, find either the raised Laguna Champagne bar or circular Fusion Mixology bar. At the first, you can take your pick of bubbly, or sparkling-based cocktails, a nice apertif to an evening of tippling. At the second, they offer an excellent program of clever cocktails using fresh ingredients, infused liquors, and gorgeous garnishes. This casino bar, crazy as it sounds, is as good as any downtown garters-and-mustaches hipster hang you can find.

Okay, now move back towards the Venetian. You could certainly make a stop at Wolfgang Puck’s CUT, they’ve got one of the most civilized lounges around, with good cocktails and wines by-the-glass, not to mention some fantastic sliders if there’s a need to feed. Next, wander through the waterfall pavilion to that “other” steakhouse, Emeril’s Delmonico, where the bar might look like any other typical watering hole, but nothing could be further from the truth. Here you’re going to find an incredible selection of whiskeys and other barrel-aged sprits—I’m talking hundreds, many very, very rare—and cocktails the likes of which have no comparison. This is the kind of place to say “surprise me,” and mean it. And again, not a bad choice for a bar bite. Excellent steak tartare, and the last time we visited, they did a pig trotter I’m still thinking about.

Still walking upright? Okay, it’s just a few steps to Public House, with a large and carefully selected beer list (believe me, Blue Moon is not the fanciest thing here) as well as a few nice original cocktails in a setting more sophisticated than its “gastropub” name implies. But still fun—make sure to check out the bathrooms. No, really.

Keep it together, so you can make one last stop, on the Venetian casino floor at the Bourbon Room. Inspired by the Rock of Ages show this is a really fun place to do a shot and burn off some calories to the hits of the 80s. Be goofy, no one cares. In fact, it’s practically required.

So there you go, from sophisticated to silly in one memorable evening. And you didn’t have to step outside a single time.

My huge thanks to E.C. Gladstone for helping out with this bar crawl. One, he knows his liquor and two, well, he actually can mix a pretty fine drink.

Right in the center of the Las Vegas strip the lights seem brighter. The atmosphere seems more energetic. Las Vegas feels a lot like, well, Las Vegas.

The Flamingo Las Vegas has the bright lights and the action spills out onto the sidewalk. This icon of the Las Vegas strip has been here since the beginning and as it evolves so does Las Vegas. Maybe it’s not a high end luxury resort but it still is a great place to stay and your dollar will go a long way.

SLEEP. The Flamingo has gone through some pretty impressive renovation as of late and these days their rooms are looking on par with the rest of the Las Vegas strip. Most people enjoy the look of the GO rooms with all the amenities you would expect from a moderate Las Vegas hotel. I personally love the look of the FAB rooms. It feels like the loft I never lived in and the lack of carpets makes me feel grown up. I know it makes no sense but the modern look is very un-Vegas. I like it.

EAT. Center Cut is the steakhouse that surprises you with lower prices and the quality usually reserved for the fancier places on the strip. If you are craving a good steak in a great atmosphere you’ll visit more than once. If you’re looking for a happier location to celebrate your Las Vegas vacation Flamingo has two of the best options available.
Carlos ‘n Charlie’s and Margaritaville define having a good time in their own special way. The Parrothead in you will sing out loud to Jimmy Buffet at Margaritaville while the eternal Spring Break party continues at Carlos ‘n Charlie’s.

EXPERIENCE. The pool experience at Flamingo Las Vegas is worth a visit alone for two the simple reason that they actually separate the crazies from the families. Listen, I love getting wild but I don’t want a kid splashing in my drink. The GO pool allows me the convenience of having a wild time without feeling odd about the kids playing Marco Polo near my mojito. When I bring my family in I don’t have to worry about my 8 year old asking me questions about body shots. The water slides make my boys and the cabanas surrounding the pool are perfect for a family day at the pool.

SEE. If you have not seen Donny and Marie you might be shocked at how much you enjoy the show. If you have you’ll see so many return visitors that you won’t feel weird about gawking at how good Marie looks and wondering if Donny would like to have drinks together. They still put on an entertaining show and they really seem like a couple of people that you would love to hang out with in the backyard. If you decide you want to laugh you’ll choose George Wallace and then you’ll be laugh until you cannot laugh anymore. This guy will give you your money’s worth and then a little more. Once he starts he doesn’t stop so get in a bathroom break before the show starts.

TIP: Make sure to join the Total Rewards program to save a lot of money on almost everything on the property.

I think most people are aware that Las Vegas has plenty of places to drink, yes? But those who like their spirits with a little more…uh, spirit…might not realize how many creative and award-winning drink makers (okay, okay, “Mixologists”) there are on the Strip. Put simply, this is the place to try something new, and you won’t hurt for choices. Here are just a handful of favorite drinks, and places to get them:

The Old Cuban, Rhumbar (Mirage). An obscure classic, the Old Cuban has been improved here by combining Flor de Cana siete años rum, lime juice, cane syrup, mint leaves and bitters with a float of Moët Napa California Champagne on top. A great sipper, even if you’re not a big rum person. And the eye candy both behind the bar and across the room at this Miami-style indoor/outdoor lounge will entertain your eyes while it occupies your lips.

Secret menu, Delmonico Steakhouse (Venetian). Emeril’s meatery offers one of the largest selections of cask aged spirits (that’s Scotch, Bourbon and other Whiskies) in the known universe. As if that’s not enough, the staff creates an ever-evolving menu of interesting cocktails to feature them, and some even more interesting off-menu experiments whose mixture is often entertainment in and of itself. Drop in and try something truly new.

Clockwork Orange, American Fish (Aria). Start with Nolet’s Gin, some add citrus, twice-filtered jalapeno and syrup, and you have a complex but truly balanced cocktail. This Michael Mina restaurant is known for great food, but it’s also one of the best happy hour destinations on the Strip. Now you know.

Lemon Verbena, Chandelier Bar (Cosmopolitan). Another drink you won’t find listed anywhere, but this one’s a bit famous. Mariena Mercer, manager of the three-level centerpiece bar in the hippest casino on the Strip, creates this astounding cocktail from tequila, Yuzu sour mix, ginger syrup and garnishes of lemon verbena leaves and a Szechuan button—a rare flower bud (actually from Africa) which makes your mouth tingle and tricks your taste buds. You have to try it!

Spiked Shake Trio, KGB (Harrah’s). Plenty of places do “adult” milkshakes now, in Vegas and everywhere else. But Kerry Simon’s burger spot lets you sample three thick, creamy flavors for the price of one, too! Captain Crunch, Chocolate-Chili and Espresso would be great choices, though they may have a special flavor worth trying as well.

I have to thank fellow Las Vegas food writer and occasional drinking buddy E.C. Gladstone for contributing to this piece.

You haven’t been to TAO? Seriously, you’re headed to Las Vegas for the weekend, you’re looking for a good nightclub, and you say you haven’t been to TAO? Well, then that makes it an easy decision. The Venetian’s legendary megaclub/lounge/restaurant wasn’t the very first modern nightclub in Las Vegas, but it was definitely the first serious one, the one where the VIP tables had real VIPs and the one that you heard about in the tabloids. If you haven’t been there, you really haven’t been nightclubbing in Vegas.

And even if you hear about other nightclubs down the Las Vegas Strip now—your XSes and your Marquees and your Hakkasans—the futuristic, sensual, ancient and earthy TAO still gets the VIPs, still gets the superstar DJs, and (here’s what you really care about) still has the hot girls and guys packing the dance floor. I mean, you’ll be there, right?

Now here’s the cool thing about TAO, and it’s a concept they practically invented: you can spend virtually your whole evening there. As I mentioned above, downstairs, TAO is a sultry lounge with cool cocktails and a dramatic pan-Asian restaurant with a massive authentic Buddha and museum-quality collection of vintage opium pipes. The food is pan-Asian (some sushi, some Szechuan, some Singapore) but don’t be afraid to move away from the things you recognize. Some of the most fun on the menu here comes from dishes you can share.

Now, if you’re in a big party (especially if that party is mostly ladies), there’s a good chance your server can help you figure out how to go straight upstairs to the club from here. Of course, if you’ve got some time to kill, you might want to sneak back outside to the Grand Canal Shoppes, buy something to augment your outfit or just check out the trippy Peter Lik gallery.

In fact, if you wanted a different experience before TAO, there are plenty of alternatives close at hand—Rockhouse and the Bourbon Bar for more All-American good times, several Italian restaurants in the Grand Canal and downstairs on the casino floor, not to mention Emeril’s great Delmonico steakhouse, Mario Batali’s B&B and fancy seafood restaurant Aquaknox. And if one night of clubbing is enough, you could check out the 80s metal musical Rock of Ages on your next night out.

Something to always remember about Las Vegas: there’s a new experience around practically every corner.

It’s a scientific fact: The last time of day or night that anyone had a hard time getting a drink on the Las Vegas Strip was way back in 1961. That man was the legendary Joe E. Brown, and the only reason he couldn’t get a drink was he couldn’t stand up.

Joking aside, Vegas has always been a fine place to whet your whistle, but times may be better now than ever. Because now, the quality and variety of things to drink have made a distinct upward climb.

Take downtown for instance—The Fremont Street casinos always had bars, naturally. But even though Fremont Street became a pedestrian zone over ten years ago, you still had to go into the casino to get some juice. Not today. Take an evening stroll through Glitter Gulch and you can take your pick of outdoor bars with frozen drinks, flair bartenders, cheap beers, whatever you want. Talk about your festive atmosphere.

Want to take things a little more seriously? At the West end of Fremont, you’ll see the huge glass dome over the entrance of the Plaza hotel. Inside is Oscar’s, the steakhouse owned by former mayor and mob lawyer Oscar Goodman, and if there’s a better place around these parts to get a serious martini or Manhattan with a fantastic view, well, I wouldn’t believe it.

From there, amble back down Fremont to Third Street, take a left and walk two blocks past the restored neon. You’ll see the Mob Bar on your left, a gorgeous 20’s style café with the kind of cocktails even a made man would appreciate (if you like things a little rougher around the edges, next door is the unabashed biker bar Hogs N Heifers. Dress down, way down).

Back on Fremont, go left again, or East, until you hit Las Vegas Boulevard. Here, on one side, you’ll see Hennessey’s, a pretty straightforward college town style Irish pub, but across the street in Neonopolis is another world altogether, the home of Drink & Drag, a former bowling alley turned campy drag queen bar, where all are welcome. Not to be missed.

East of the Boulevard are several more of Downtown Las Vegas’ most interesting watering holes, each different from the next. Start with the enigmatic Downtown Cocktail Room, where some of the best sips in town are shaken and stirred. Then on a whole ‘nother tip, try Insert Coins, the classic videogame-filled club. Also on the block, The ski-lodge style Griffin, artsy Vanguard, Broadway piano bar Don’t Tell Mama and indie band haven Beauty Bar.

Think you can find the right vibe for you? If you can’t, I guess there’s only one choice: buy a bottle at CVS (also on Fremont, open 24/7), take it back to your room, and start your own party.

Eric Gladstone contributed heavily to this piece as he did most of the drinking as I talked to the servers about breast feeding and baby strollers. I’m a father with a young family, what can I say? I’m keeping it real.

Ready For A Peepshow?

Want to see a show you’ll really remember? A show that could truly be presented “Only in Vegas?” Then consider Peepshow at Planet Hollywood. Maybe you’ve heard about it—the show that ex-Playmate and former Girls Next Door star Holly Madison made famous? Now Holly has been replaced in the starring role by another astounding reality star, Coco Austin (Ice Loves Coco).

And before you start wondering, yes, they will be Showing and you will be Peeping. This is Vegas, and despite the show’s nursery rhyme-inspired theme, this is definitely a hot hot hot adult show. And Coco is not the only one onstage, not by a long shot.

Truth be told, there are many ‘adult revues’ to choose from on the Las Vegas Strip, but Peep Show, swiftly becoming an institution, is a little different. Why? Because it’s the only one with Broadway-level production values, original music, and an actual storyline. In other words, it’s a great choice for couples with a sense of adventure, and by the way, it isn’t only the women onstage who lose their tops.

“It’s not about how much you take it off, it’s how you take it off” says creator/director Jerry Mitchell. The story follows one little Bo Peep trying to find her way through traps set by fairytale land characters like Red Ridinghood on her way to finding true love. Every character has her (or his) own twists, but you’ll be impressed that the talent is more than skin deep. So just in case you’re there when Coco might have the night off (You got a problem with that? Talk to Ice T), it’s still a great show full of smoking hot talented singing and dancing women and men. Did we mention the men? Because no matter who you are, if that bathtub scene doesn’t stir something inside you, better check your pulse.

Early for the show? Maybe you should consider grabbing a bite downstairs at Gordon Ramsay’s on-fire fancy BurGR spot (get the burger with duck bacon, trust me). Or play a few hands in the casino’s Pleasure Pit, surrounded by sexy dealers and dancers. Focus on the cards!

Afterward, stay in the sexy mood with a visit to the sexy Gallery Nightclub and their Pussycat Dolls Burlesque Saloon. Or maybe just stop by for a drink at Strip House. The steakhouse next to the theatre is known as a place where the Peep Show cast likes to unwind.

Thanks to E.C. Gladstone, Las Vegas Writer, who contributed to this piece. It’s not that I don’t enjoy good looking performers in outfits that make me think about bed time stories, he is just a bit better about being objective in these situations. Confused? Yeah, me too

Friday Night at LAX Nightclub

It’s Friday. It’s Vegas. You want to make this a weekend to remember, and you want to hit the ground running. It’s a club night, but let the other people line up and wait forever at the newer hot spots: you’re set for LAX, the huge spot at Luxor that still draws a hot crowd to a sexy dance floor and plush bottle booths.

We need to build up to that, though. Luckily, there’s a lot going on at the infamous pyramid and its sister resort, Mandalay Bay. If you’re not ready to play the odds, there’s some good last minute shopping in the connecting mini-mall Mandalay Place, whether you want to get stylish at Elton’s, find something fun at Urban Outfitters or get ready for the get down at Frederick’s of Hollywood. If it’s just time for a drink, well, get ready for the funkiest bar crawl you can imagine, starting with the ice-lined bar Minus 5, moving to authentic Irish pub RiRa, then the huge beer selection at Burger Bar and legendary Margarita joint Hussong’s Cantina.

Did we mention tequila? Oh, yes. And if you’re serious about the stuff, you also need to check out T &T, a more modern-style Mexican spot on Luxor’s second level, with sexy servers and a crazy selection of the blue agave spirit. Among the many other bars in Luxor, two other favorites are the semi-secret Saville Row, with great mixology cocktails, and the bar at Tender for Scotches and such. Want to catch the game? Find Public House, where you can do it in comfort, with a good selection of beers and some fun share plates.

When hunger hits, staying at T and T is a good call if you’re in the mood for Mex (solid carnitas plate), Burger Bar for a gourmet ground round, or RiRa for the fish & chips. Need a more serious sit-down? Tender is really the call then, a steakhouse that may not have a celebrity name attached to it, but is dedicated to serving an impressive selection of meats and very good veggies as well. It might be the Strip’s most underrated restaurant, in fact.

Now, one of the great things about LAX is that the entrance is very well set-up, so you won’t endure a lot of nonsense getting in. And once you do, luckily the dance floor is big and there aren’t a lot of people telling you where you can’t stand. This is a place to actually enjoy yourself.

Time to wind down? Both Public House and Slice of Vegas are good spots to grab a late night bite. And in the morning, head back to T&T for the Mariachi Brunch. There is definitely nothing else like it in Vegas—and probably not back home either!
